7 Tips for Traveling with Kids for Stress-Free Spring Break Fun

Advice on Making Travel a little Easier

By Naida March 27, 2024

Traveling with young children this Spring Break can be a daunting task, but with some careful planning and preparation, it can be a fun and enjoyable experience for the whole family. As my daughter is a dancer, who attends multiple intensives, workshops, and competitions, I've had the opportunity to travel quite a lot, by myself, with the two kiddos. Of course, all families are different, however, the following advice seems to work for us every time.

BEST TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH KIDS
  1. Plan Ahead

Planning is key to a stress-free trip with young children. Before you leave, research your destination and plan your itinerary, including activities that are suitable for your child's age and interests. Make sure to also research child-friendly restaurants and accommodations.

  1. Pack Smart

When traveling with young children, it's important to pack smart. Bring along essential items such as diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes, as well as any medications your child may need. Don't forget their favorite "plushy" or toy and if they are old enough, their phone or tech for occasional downtime. It's also a good idea to pack snacks and toys to keep your child entertained during the journey.

  1. Keep a Routine

Maintaining your child's routine is important when traveling. Try to stick to regular meal times, nap times, and bedtime routines as much as possible, even if it means adjusting your itinerary. This will help your child feel more comfortable and reduce the risk of meltdowns.

  1. Allow for Downtime

Traveling can be tiring, especially for young children. Allow for downtime in your itinerary, where you can relax and recharge. This can be as simple as taking a break in a park, playing a game together in your hotel room, watching a movie or reading a story.

  1. Stay Flexible

Traveling with young children can be unpredictable, so it's important to stay flexible. Be prepared to change your plans if needed, and be patient if your child needs more time or attention than expected.

  1. Use Technology Wisely

Technology can be a lifesaver when traveling with young children. Bring along a tablet or smartphone loaded with games and videos to keep your child entertained during long journeys. However, it's important to use technology wisely and limit screen time to avoid over-stimulation and fatigue.

  1. Enlist Help

If you're traveling with a partner or family member, enlist their help in looking after your child. This can give you a much-needed break and allow you to enjoy your trip more. If traveling alone, consider finding a Kids Club or a local class your child can try out to give you a little time off. In the past, my son has enjoyed great classes, while on vacation, he may not have had the opportunity to try at home (ie: rock climbing, astronomy at the museum, surfing etc).

Traveling with young children can be a fun and rewarding experience with some careful planning and preparation. By planning ahead, packing smart, keeping a routine, allowing for downtime, staying flexible, using technology wisely, and enlisting help, you can make traveling with young children stress-free and enjoyable for the whole family.
