Summer Essentials in the Car

The difference in weather between winter and summer can be pretty extreme, and each one requires a different set of essentials. I find it can be very helpful to have a Summer Tote and a Winter Tote for the car. Being prepared for a sudden change of plans or a sudden change in the weather can make all the difference in a family outing!

Here are our summer essentials for the car:

  • Sunscreen (regular and waterproof)
  • Extra diapers, pull-ups, and swim diapers if your child is in that stage
  • A hat, swimsuit, towel, and change of clothes for everyone
  • Beach toys like pails, shovels, rakes, sand shapers, and trucks
  • Swimming accessories like goggles or floaties
  • Baby powder (sprinkle it on after sandbox play and the sand will literally brush right off)
  • Books, sidewalk chalk, and bubbles (in case you're stuck waiting somewhere)
  • Hoodies or sweatshirts for you and your child (drawstrings removed, of course)
  • A washable tote bag for wet or sandy clothes
  • A bottle of water and/or a bottle of wound cleanser plus hand sanitizer
  • Bandages and antibiotic cream or spray
  • Tweezers and alcohol wipes to clean them
  • Insect repellent and anti-itch cream or spray
  • Instant cold compress
  • Individually packaged non-perishable snacks like crackers or dried fruit

For easy carrying and finding, have all your necessary supplies in a box or bag with dividers. You can place often used or needed items on the back of the front seats in hanging pockets for easy visuals and easy access for the kids in the back seat. There's no right or wrong way to organize. Whatever works for you and your family and what you need to do. Just make sure you are ready and have what you and your family might need.
